"Idylls of Summer" or "Bocklin's Swans" 18x24 inch oil on panel
THE STORY
“... But all beautiful things, inherently, have this function– to excite the viewers toward sublime thought. Glory to the world, that good teacher.
Among the swans there is none called the least, or the greatest.”
-from Mary Oliver’s poem Evidence
My personal translation of the word “Beauty” has much in common with perfection, and that this exhibit was my invitation to paint a piece based heavily on Arnold Bocklin’s Isle of Life. Beauty approaches holiness for me, going beyond concepts of attractiveness. It’s felt as a deep joy with a clinging vine of existential sorrow.
