Meet My Inspired by Cezanne Collection!
Cezanne Apples, 16x20 inches oil on panel
I'm excited to share photos of my most recent finished still life, "Cezanne Apples" which, as the title tells you, is part of my Inspired by Cezanne series.
The idea behind these paintings is that I'm stretching myself to make pictures that scream out that they are made by a human being, delightfully imperfect with texture and thoughtful design.
I am also exploring how to bring in a certain sense of naivity; the fun part of visual inquiry that delights, not in knowing how to paint something I see as I see it (which I do), but rather allowing myself to exagerate, to flatten space, to engage with my reality in new ways.
These qualities are what I find charming about Cezanne's work. If you've hung around with me a while, you'll know Cezanne is one of the artists that I don't call a favorite, yet I'm fascinated by the fact that I can stare at his paintings like a hungry person. Why? I think I'm attracted by the rawness and sincere inquiry of his work even if his technique is (to me) lacking a bit. I don't think drawing came easily to him.
When I see his work, my thoughts flow like this: “Look at his humility in exploring what was in front of his gaze… even if he was going at the forms in a rather naive way (my opinion), his curiousity and sincerity comes through. This speaks of life force. He WAS. The subjects WERE. This scene, this light was real in that time. If you know what makes me tick as a painter and person (it’s all over in my bio and statements), the arts are all about relishing life in the light that it’s short. Maybe that’s morbid to you, but that’s honestly a way I break through the daily grind and fear to stand, facing the light in gratefulness that today anyway, me and many of my loved ones ARE experiencing life!
How does this resonate with your feelings about art?
Some of my older pieces were looking forward in a way to this series.
