George Emerson

Once upon a time, back in 2000, I fell in love with a film, A Room with a View; a character, George Emerson; and a city, Florence.

I’ve talked about it before, but my husband and our young child and I were miserably sick with a flu when we watched A Room with a View for the first time. My husband and I looked at each other and said, “Can you imagine what it feels like to wake up in a city like that each day?” I had seen ads for art ateliers in Florence and I had been following artists’ careers who were tied to that education track, so decided to pursue it.

During that time, I wanted to try my hand at portrait sculpting, so I printed some poor quality screen shots from the movie as well as other images of English actor, Julian Sands and pasted them on poster board and went to work. I was acquainted with a successful portrait sculptor at the time, and she gave me some basic pointers on how to proceed. Artistically, I am very proud of this piece, although structurally it needs to be helped by a professional at a foundry.
