"Who Has Seen the Wind?"
Titled from the famous poem by Christina Georgina Rossetti, this 12"x 16" oil on panel was inspired by the cloud shapes coming toward me in the hills of Pennsylvania.

"Peonies and Pears"
Those of you who garden know that peonies (at least in Michigan) bloom for little more than one week. If I'm lucky, I get two peony paintings in a summer! While I used peonies as minor players in a couple other pieces this year, this is THE peony painting of 2017.

"September Pastoral No.1-Through the Trees"
“September Pastoral No.1-Through the Trees” was painted from the same viewpoint as “September Pastoral No.2-Path.” I simply shifted my gaze and gear 90 degrees to enjoy the new composition. These trees with their gentle color change are very characteristic of Michigan autumn landscapes.

"La Tavola"
"La Tavola" is Italian for "The Table". This painting uses some pieces of antique kitchenware given to me by some friends in Douglas, MI, as well as a green glass bottle from my painter/bottle collector grandpa. It's a masterful piece that can handle a large wall.

"Hawthorn Hill"
"Hawthorn Hill" was painted on my second year painting at this beautiful land trust farm. It's a lovely painting, and probably kicked off my pastoral landscape series. To me, pastorals are relaxing and sometimes slightly idealized places that make a sort of portal to a happy place.

"La Principessa"
Principessa is the Italian word for princess. This painting and its partner piece, "Principe", are inspired by the old story of Cinderella. In this painting, the princess waits to be rescued from a storm, though her rescuer in the ship off in the distant right has met with hard times in the water.

"Il Principe"
Il principe is Italian for The Prince. This painting, like its companion piece, is inspired by the story of Cinderella. The turban squash makes an inspiring and colorful crown for this princely pumpkin.

"Lucretia"
This painting was painted from life in Florence, Italy. The model was a young woman from Sardinia, but my initial concept for the piece was based on a Rembrandt painting of Lucretia. Over the years, I’ve titled it: “Girl from Sardinia”, “Her Name Is Allegory”, and “Lucretia”. I’m back on “Lucretia” again, but you may take your pick!
This painting is an original oil on linen. In its custom American-made frame it measures: 53"h x 48"w x 1" 3/4d.

"The Bride"
I have titled this painting Ophelia, The Bride or Annunciation, but it really could bear many titles. I don’t intellectualize my paintings while I work on them. I choose my subjects intuitively. Titles are slow in coming because I try not to anticipate where a painting will take me.
A young woman is seated alone in her wedding dress in an undefined space that can be past, present, or future- all of which tumble about in her mind. It is an iconographic moment. Anna, as The Bride, represents to me those times of struggle between the ideal and the real. She could be Mother Earth (Gaia), a struggling nation, or Mary at the Annunciation. It is the moment when we recognize the real has supplanted the ideal, when the real subverts all imagined ideals.

This original oil on panel was inspired by one of my painter heroes, Chardin. It measures 19"x 27" on its own, and 24.5"x 34.5" in its custom, made in Ohio frame.
